BREAK 100
Breaking 100 is not about hitting good shots.
It is about not hitting disastrous ones. Ninety-nine on a par 72 leaves you twenty-seven over — a bogey on every hole, and nine holes where you can drop another and still get there.
Bogey on all eighteen holes is +18.
THE ARITHMETIC
What 99 actually looks like
On a par 72, a 99 is twenty-seven over. Bogey on all eighteen holes is eighteen over, which gets you to 90 — comfortably inside the target. So breaking 100 does not require a single par.
Put differently: you can double-bogey nine holes and bogey the other nine and shoot exactly 99. The arithmetic is far kinder than it feels standing on the first tee.
Which means the round is rarely lost on the holes you played badly. It is lost on the two or three where you took eight or nine.

A blow-up hole is worth three or four bogeys on its own, and it usually comes from the same short list — a penalty off the tee, a second penalty trying to rescue it, then three shots to get down from beside the green.
None of that is fixed by hitting the ball better. It is fixed by taking the shot that cannot go out of play, which is a decision rather than a skill.

Roughly a 27 handicap on a par 72, since 99 is twenty-seven over. In practice a golfer who breaks 100 occasionally is usually somewhere in the high twenties.
Do I need to par any holes to break 100?
No. Bogey on every hole is 90. You could double-bogey half the round and still shoot 99.
What is the fastest way to break 100?
Removing penalty strokes and blow-up holes, rather than hitting better shots. One nine on a card costs the same as three bogeys.
