Stroke Index
What is stroke index in golf?
Stroke index is a ranking from 1 to 18 that tells you how hard each hole is relative to the others on that course, where 1 is the hardest. It decides which holes you receive your handicap strokes on, so it is what turns a gross score into a net one.

How does Stableford scoring work?
Stableford awards points on each hole based on your net score against par: two points for a net par, three for a net birdie, one for a net bogey, and nothing for a net double bogey or worse. The highest total wins, and 36 points means you played exactly to your handicap.

How is a golf handicap calculated?
A handicap index is the average of your best eight score differentials from your most recent twenty rounds. Each differential adjusts your score for how hard the course played, using the formula (113 ÷ slope rating) × (your adjusted score − course rating).

What does strokes gained actually measure?
Strokes gained compares every shot you hit to what a benchmark golfer would take from the same position, so it measures each shot against the situation it was played from rather than against par. Positive means you gained ground on the benchmark; negative means you lost it.

What are greens in regulation and scrambling?
A green in regulation means reaching the putting surface in at least two shots fewer than par — two shots on a par 4, three on a par 5. Scrambling measures what happens when you miss: the percentage of missed greens where you still made par or better.

Which golf scoring format should you play?
Stroke play counts every shot and suits serious competition; match play scores hole by hole and suits two players or pairs; Stableford caps the damage on any hole and suits mixed-ability groups; skins puts a prize on each hole and suits a casual fourball. The right choice mostly depends on how wide the handicap spread in your group is.
