BREAK 90
Break 90 is bogey golf, plus one par.
Eighty-nine on a par 72 is seventeen over. A bogey on all eighteen holes is eighteen over. So the whole target is one shot better than bogey golf — which is a very different problem from the one most people think they are solving.
Bogey on all eighteen holes is +18.
THE ARITHMETIC
One par. That is the entire gap.
Bogey on every hole gives you 90. Break 90 asks for eighty-nine, so you need to save exactly one shot across eighteen holes — one par, or one hole where you scrambled instead of dropping two.
Framed that way it stops being a ball-striking problem. Somebody shooting 95 is not eighteen shots from bogey golf; they are five holes from it.
The five holes are almost never the ones that felt worst.
WHERE THE SHOTS GO
The two places 90s hide
At this level greens in regulation are still low — most golfers breaking 90 hit a handful a round — so almost every hole is a scramble. That makes two things decisive, and neither is your driver.
The first is what happens after you miss a green. The second is the first putt. Both are measured on every round you score, and both are the cheapest shots in golf to find.
